Liverpool Set to Dominate Premier League Title Race
Liverpool’s Advantage Over Arsenal
Liverpool great Jamie Carragher believes that Arne Slot’s team will not just see off Arsenal to claim the Premier League title, but is sure they will win it well. The Reds are well-positioned to win the title for the first time since 2020, having managed to develop a 13-point gap between themselves and second-placed Arsenal.
Carragher has long been of the view that the Reds are a better team than Arsenal at the moment and feels that even if the teams were level on points, Liverpool would edge it. He believes that Liverpool’s lack of injury issues, compared to Arsenal’s, will give them the upper hand in the title race.
“I felt Liverpool would win the league by ten or 12 points and I said that to Gary [Neville],” Carragher told the It’s Called Soccer show. “And the only reason being was I felt if, imagine the season would start it was a 12 or 13 game season and Liverpool and Arsenal were level points.”
Carragher’s confidence in Liverpool’s ability to win the league comfortably is further bolstered by the fact that Arsenal have been dealing with several key injuries, including to players like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Gabriel Jesus.
“Liverpool are a slightly better team than Arsenal because they are ahead of them in the league and also they have got no injuries,” Carragher said. “So I would expect Liverpool over those 12/13 games to probably get another five or six points more than what Arsenal would get because of the situation Arsenal find themselves in.”
Despite Arsenal’s injury woes, Carragher believes the Gunners have done well to stay in the fight for the title for this long, and he acknowledges the challenge that Liverpool still face in the remaining fixtures.
Remaining Fixtures and Challenges for Liverpool
The Reds play just one Premier League game in March, which means that regardless of what happens, they will probably have to wait until late April to seal the league title. Along the way, they will face some tricky games, including rivals Everton, an unpredictable Tottenham Hotspur side, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
Additionally, the distraction of the Champions League could pose a challenge for Liverpool as they look to maintain their focus on the domestic front.
Season | Title winner | Gap to second place |
---|---|---|
2023-24 | Manchester City | 2 points |
2022-23 | Manchester City | 5 points |
2021-22 | Manchester City | 1 point |
2020-21 | Manchester City | 12 points |
2019-20 | Liverpool | 18 points |
While Liverpool’s position in the league and their lack of injury concerns give them a clear advantage over Arsenal, they cannot afford to become complacent. The upcoming games will be crucial, and Liverpool will need to maintain their focus and intensity to secure the title in style.
